Forget Diamonds, Fitbits Are A Girl’s Best Friend

If you have a television, computer, or watch anything with commercials you’ve undoubtedly seen a commercial or two (or 50) for Fitbit. I will admit that not only did their commercials irritate me for the longest time, but I was skeptical as to how a glorified pedometer could help improve my fitness that much. Little did I know, it would become one of the most important components to my epic weight loss journey.

As you probably know by this point, I began my weight loss journey on June 9th, 2015 and after a few weeks of sticking to my eating and fitness plans I decided I wanted to get my hands on one of them fancy Fitbits. Something you should probably know about me is that I am extremely competitive, my friends called me Tonya Harding in high school. That’s not true, I totally stole that line from Abbi on Broad City but it may as well be true. When I was first dating Chris he asked me to go bowling with his friends and my lovely and endearing roommate and best friend, Ariel, asked if I was “ready for him to see that side of me this early on”. Anyway, this splendid and beautiful creature I have the pleasure of calling my best friend was so generous that for my birthday in July she gave me a Fitbit Zip.

My little blue Zip, I didn’t leave the house without this clipped to my body. Ever.

From the day I received this magical device, we became inseparable. I would not go anywhere without it, if that Zip was not clipped onto my bra or pants I was not going to walk further than necessary. When my Zip was on my person I started walking extensively, I would park far away from every store I drove to, I would walk to the drugstore across the street for something as unnecessary as more nail polish. I needed to see those green smiley faces every day, that I had walked 10,000 steps, 5 miles, burned over 2900 calories that day. I became addicted to getting steps, especially if I was in a challenge with other people. If I didn’t have at least 10,000 steps that day I felt like a sloth who was completely immobile.

I have fond memories of so many nights where Ariel and I would be pacing our apartment trying to get to 10,000 steps before midnight. Or when we were feeling particularly adventurous, walking up and down the stairs of our building passing each other and talking about god only knows what until we reached out goals. There were so many days where one of us would be pacing the living room while we watched the TV together. Yeah, we’re weird but it’s cool because we know it.

My greatest step day ever, April 16th aka the day of my 10k.

Since then, I have ditched the Zip as I acquired a Charge HR a few months ago and as much as I loved the pedometer aspect of the Zip the Charge is much fancier. I didn’t care so much about the lack of tracking floors climbed on the Zip, but I am obsessed with having a heart rate monitor especially for my cardio. But my original Fitbit has a special place in my heart, as it was one of the biggest motivators to keep my steps up.

What I’m saying here is if you’ve been considering getting a Fitbit, DO IT! It has been a great motivator for me and absolutely recommend them to anyone else. If you have any thoughts on Fitbit or have a great story about them leave a comment or shoot me a message. I would love to hear from any of my readers!

  1. My Fitbit made me realize just how sedentary a desk job is!! But on the days I am purposeful about my water consumption- my steps go up! 100 steps round trip per bathroom break.
